Our eyes met.

For one second, he looked exactly like the boy who used to take my Halloween candy and tell me Mom said sharing meant he got first pick.

Then he was gone.

In his place sat a man who had built a company from my erased life.

Rachel said, “No further questions at this time.”

Then Grant’s attorney stood.

His name was Miles Renner.

Silver hair.

Soft voice.

Kind eyes that were not kind.

He approached the witness stand with a yellow legal pad.

“Commander Moore,” he said, “first, thank you for your service.”

I did not respond.

He smiled.

“You and your brother had a difficult relationship long before Harbor Shield Recovery, correct?”

“We had a complicated relationship.”

“Complicated because you were often away?”

“Complicated because Grant lied.”

A few people shifted.

Renner smiled thinner.

“Let’s stay precise. You left home at twenty-one.”

“I enlisted at twenty-one.”

“And from that point forward, Grant was the child physically present for your parents.”

“He was physically present, yes.”
